Hugh Turvey and Artemi Kyriacou:
Together we draw from our art / design / photography experience and work individually and collaboratively in producing photographic imagery. Our specialist area of x-ray photography is about 'insight', the 'true nature' and the 'constructed world' around us. We use a complete range of radiographic tools for capturing structure, form and function of the normally banal and ordinary. Our work is currently held in private collections in USA and Europe.

Inspiration:
  • Hugh's early influence came from Russian Constructivist concepts (most notably the work of Alexander Rodchenko: "the lens of his camera discovered objects of unusual architecture, rhythm, and plasticity") and more recently the extensive and innovative high speed and stroboscopic photographic studies by Dr Harold E Edgerton which explore the "ingenuity behind the creativity" and "seeing the unseen".... Not forgetting George (my semiology lecturer at college for his wisdom and visual prowess), M.C.Escher, H.R.Giger, S.Dali, Gered Mankowitz and artist Elisabeth Arbuckle for my first camera.

  • Artemi's early influence in photography came from a great pioneer of his time 'Ansel Adams' the creator of zone systems and the great understanding concepts of light and film exposures. Man Ray was another influence, especially his bold graphic landscapes which were always compositionally beautifully framed. From a very young age creativity has always shone out and has been a great passion which has flowed through her career... Not forgetting 'Paul Crompton' (lecturer) and Michael Marshall (renowned black and white printer) for encouragement and belief.

Technique | x-ray:

  • The images are normally captured using a conventional black and white film (17x14inches) which is exposed by phosphors as x-rays collide with it. Occasionally the images are a varied mix of photography and x-ray. Coloring is the final stage of the process and allows us to enhance areas of density variance and interest within the image.

Definition | x-ray:
  • The electromagnetic energy between the ultraviolet and gamma ray portions of the spectrum is made up of wavelengths called x-rays
  • Electromagnetic radiation of very short wavelengths emitted by electrons whose velocity is suddenly reduced.
